Frequently Asked Questions

About the Oahu activities blog

Have questions for your guide, about how this blog works, or how to use it while planning your trip? Here are a few common things visitors ask before exploring Oahu.

That depends on your particular travel style, but there are a few classics.

Start with the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor (book tickets at recreation.gov in advance – free but go fast), the Diamond Head hike for panoramic views of Honolulu, and Hanauma Bay snorkeling. Those three cover history, hiking, and marine life. Add a circle island tour to see the North Shore, Windward Coast, and central Oahu in a single day.

Oahu is warm year-round with ocean temperatures between 75 and 80 degrees.

April to June and September to November are the least crowded months with good weather. Peak season is June to August and December to January – book Pearl Harbor tickets and popular tours weeks ahead during these periods.

Not necessarily. Waikiki, Diamond Head, and a bus to Pearl Harbor are all doable without a car.

For the North Shore, Windward Coast, and circle island routes a rental car or guided tour makes more sense. A private tour is the most time-efficient option if you have limited days on the island.

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and USS Arizona Memorial boat are free.

But timed tickets for the memorial are required and should be booked in advance at recreation.gov. The paid attractions – USS Battleship Missouri ($29), Pacific Aviation Museum ($27), and USS Bowfin Submarine ($16) – are separate. A guided tour from Waikiki with transport and guaranteed memorial tickets typically costs $89 to $145.

More than most visitors expect!

Pearl Harbor is the most visited attraction in Hawaii. Diamond Head, Nuuanu Pali Lookout, and Makapu’u Lighthouse are serious hikes with payoff views. Kualoa Ranch (the Jurassic Park valley) runs ATV and movie location tours. The Bishop Museum covers 1,500 years of Hawaiian history. Iolani Palace is the only royal palace on US soil. Byodo-In Temple sits in a valley full of peacocks 30 minutes from Waikiki.

Yes, hundreds if not thousands of times. But they never get old.
