This has always been one of my favorite places on Oahu. For 20 years, Iʻve enjoyed each visit, regardless of the length. I used to do homework on the 3 hour public bus, just to watch the waves.

North Shore & ʻBanzaiʻ Pipeline

Many people visit Oahu specifically to see iconic waves, the legendary surf culture, or simply an unforgettable sunset. Pipeline at Ehukai Beach is on many visitors’ Hawaii bucket lists for good reason. Here’s common questions about how you can make the most of your visit to this world-renowned beach:

Ehukai Beach Park is located along the Kamehameha Highway (Hwy 83) on Oahu’s North Shore. It’s just a short drive from Waimea Valley, making it easy to find if you’re already exploring the area.

The parking lot is limited, but roadside parking is often nearby, but probably not if there are waves.

Ehukai Beach Park is synonymous with the Banzai Pipeline, one of the world’s most famous, dangerous, challenging, and best-formed surf breaks. During the winter, surfers flock here to ride the powerful waves.

The surf calms in summer, and the beach becomes a peaceful spot to enjoy the ocean and scenic views.

The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset. The best time to visit depends on what you’re hoping to experience:

  • Winter (November to February): If you’re a fan of high-stakes surf, winter is the time to come. This is when Pipeline’s massive waves are in full force, and the surf competitions are happening.
  • Summer (June to September): Summer offers a calmer experience, perfect for those who want to enjoy the area’s natural beauty without the heavy surf.
  • Off-limits for commercial vehicles all year round.
No reservation is necessary to visit Ehukai Beach Park. However, if you’re planning an event or a large group outing, you may need to obtain a permit. Commercial activities such as filming or photography require special permission from local authorities.

Yes, there are some essential guidelines:
Lifeguards: Lifeguards are on duty during the day, so check the conditions before entering the water.

  • Surf Conditions: Pipeline’s waves are notorious for being massive, so only experienced surfers should attempt them..
  • Parking: Parking is limited, and the lot fills up quickly. If you cannot find a spot, you can park along the highway, but be mindful of no-parking zones.
  • No Swimming in Winter: Swimming is not recommended during winter due to the large and powerful waves.
