Where is Byodo Temple, and how do you get there?
Can you go inside the temple and what makes it special?
Unlike busier historic sites, Byodo-In is designed for peace and reflection, not worship. It blends Japanese architecture and Hawaiian landscape. The grounds are serene, spiritual, and visually stunning. You can also enter the temple if you wish. All they ask (apart from the admission) is that you remove your shoes.

When is the best time to visit the Byodo Temple?
Early mornings or are cooler and quieter, especially midweek. The soft morning light is perfect for photos. But keep in mind the tour busses generally pack the parking lot for the first couple hours.
They close late in the afternoon, which means you can get back to the City in time to watch a sunset.
Do you need a reservation to visit the Byodo Temple?
Are there restrictions or rules at the Byodo-In?
Be respectful. Please speak softly, dress modestly, and don’t bring food or drinks into the temple area. Photography is fine for personal use, but drones and professional shoots need permission.
You will likely see community members paying respects to their loved ones as you drive through the cemetery toward the temple. So we encourage guests (as we try to do) to tread lightly and be mindful as you visit this replica of the original in Kyoto.
