Paumalu or Sunset Beach
Located along the North Shore’s famed “Seven-Mile Miracle,” not far from Ehukai Beach Park, Sunset hosts world-renowned surf competitions like the Vans Triple Crown.
From November to March, waves can reach 30 feet, attracting top surfers and spectators. In summer, the calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Paumalu is just across the road from Ted’s Bakery, between Waimea and the Turtle Bay Resort. Sunset is a must-stop on any island road trip, whether for surf or scenery.

About Sunset Beach & North Shore
Sunset Beach is a perfect place to stop, stretch your legs, catch the waves, or just catch your breath. Still, it’s a thrill to see during one of the best scenic drives on Oahu. Scroll down for tips and frequently asked questions to help you plan your visit.
Where is Sunset Beach, and how do you get there?
Sunset Beach is on Oahu’s North Shore, right off Kamehameha Highway (Hwy 83), between Waimea Bay and Turtle Bay Resort. It’s about an hour from Waikiki by car.
There’s a beach park with free parking, and additional roadside spots across from Ted’s Bakery. But it can be scarce, especially during big wave season.
What makes Sunset Beach (Paumalu) so special?
Is it safe for people to swim at Sunset Beach?
Do you need reservations to visit Paumalu?
No reservations are needed to visit Sunset Beach. It’s a public beach, open to everyone year-round, with no entry fees or permits required.
Are there rules or restrictions at Sunset beach?
Yes, as with all beaches in Hawaiʻi, Sunset Beach has a few key rules to follow:
- Check for posted signs and be cautious, especially in winter when waves are massive.
- No alcohol, smoking, or littering: Hawaiʻi beach parks prohibit these to protect the environment.
- Respect marine life: Do not touch turtles, monk seals, or coral.
- Parking: Limited roadside parking is available; don’t block driveways or park illegally.
- Commercial vehicles: Cannot stop to bring tourists to the beach.
- On the other hand, we can clean up the park across the street, where you can soak in the views.
We love showing guests Sunset Beach because there’s always something to see. Huge waves, peaceful waters, or the kind of evening sky that makes you soak in the memories. Spot professional surfers or calm waves, and sunsets linger just a little longer.
