Back-breaking Sandy Beach
Whether you’re watching the surf, snapping sunrise photos, or just catching your breath between stops, Sandy’s gives you a real sense of Oahu’s raw beauty.
Just be sure to always maintain a safe distance from the water. Powerful barrels form right at the shoreline before collapsing in only a few feet of water.
While many visitors know Ehukai Beach Park for winter surf, Sandy Beach delivers dramatic shore break throughout much of the year.
Waves on the South Shore
You can find this local favorite between Waimanalo and the much calmer waters at Hanauma Bay on the South Shore. Both of those places offer much better options for visitors to safely put their feet or face in the water.

But the energy of the surf is raw, real, and nothing to be taken lightly. As we say on Oahu, there are safer beaches down the road.
Is it safe to take a dip at Sandy Beach?
Absolutely not. Due to the dangerous shore break and strong currents, swimming is not advised. Lifeguards are on duty, but injuries are common and often serious.
Stick to the dry, rough sand and enjoy the view from a safe distance unless you’re an expert waterman.

Are there restrictions at Sandy Beach?
Yes, there are several important restrictions and safety considerations:
- Swimming: Swimming is never recommended due to substantial shore breaks and powerful currents. Only experienced bodyboarders and bodysurfers should enter the water, and it’s crucial to consult with a lifeguard before doing so.
- Alcohol and Smoking: Consumption of alcohol and smoking is prohibited at Sandy Beach Park.
- Pets: Dogs are not allowed on the beach but there is a massive park.
- Shade and Amenities: The beach has no shade, so bring an umbrellas or tents. There are restrooms, showers, and picnic tables available for public use.
- Lifeguards: Sandy Beach Park is staffed with lifeguards daily from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM, providing safety for beachgoers. But especially in places like this, keep in mind, they have families that want to see them come home. So please donʻt put yourself, or them, in unneccessary danger.
