Frequent questions

About this Buddhist Temple

This temple was constructed in 1963 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first immigrants from Japan to the Kingdom of Hawaii . But today serves as a cultural bridge for visitors from around the world. Scroll down for tips and answers to common questions.

The temple is in the Valley of the Temples in Kaneohe, on Oahu’s east side. It’s an easy, scenic drive, and private tours can handle all logistics. There is a bus stop outside the cemetery, but itʻs a long walk from there to the temple.

Unlike busier historic sites, Byodo-In is designed for peace and reflection, not worship. It blends Japanese architecture and Hawaiian landscape. The grounds are serene, spiritual, and visually stunning. You can also enter the temple if you wish. All they ask (apart from the admission) is that you remove your shoes.

Early mornings or are cooler and quieter, especially midweek. The soft morning light is perfect for photos. But keep in mind the tour busses generally pack the parking lot for the first couple hours.

They close late in the afternoon, which means you can get back to the City in time to watch a sunset.

Nope. Just pay the small fee at the entrance. If you’re on a private tour, your guide will handle the other details.

Be respectful.  Please speak softly, dress modestly, and don’t bring food or drinks into the temple area. Photography is fine for personal use, but drones and professional shoots need permission.
