About Sunset Beach & North Shore

Sunset Beach is a perfect place to stop, stretch your legs, catch the waves, or just catch your breath. On the other hand, itʻs still a thrill to see it as you drive to your next adventure. Scroll down for tips and frequently asked questions to help you plan your visit.

Sunset Beach is on Oahu’s North Shore, right off Kamehameha Highway (Hwy 83), between Waimea Bay and Turtle Bay Resort. It’s about an hour from Waikiki by car.

There’s a beach park with free parking, and additional roadside spots across from Ted’s Bakery. But it can be scarce, especially during big wave season.

This is one of the most famous surfing beaches on the planet. In winter, it’s a front-row seat for epic waves and pro surfers. In summer, the surf calms down, revealing a beautiful swimming beach with soft sand, clear water, and plenty of space to spread out. And the sunsets? Some of the best on the island.
Swimming here is only recommended during calm summer months. In winter, the waves and rip currents are mighty and should only be braved by experienced surfers. Always check conditions and talk to lifeguards before going in the water.

No reservations are needed to visit Sunset Beach. It’s a public beach, open to everyone year-round, with no entry fees or permits required.

Yes, as with all beaches in Hawaiʻi, Sunset Beach has a few key rules to follow:

  • Check for posted signs and be cautious, especially in winter when waves are massive.
  • No alcohol, smoking, or littering: Hawaiʻi beach parks prohibit these to protect the environment.
  • Respect marine life: Do not touch turtles, monk seals, or coral.
  • Parking: Limited roadside parking is available; don’t block driveways or park illegally.
  • Commercial vehicles: Cannot stop to bring tourists to the beach.
  • On the other hand, we can clean up the park across the street, where you can soak in the views.
