More information about

"Chinamanʻs Hat" at Kualoa

Just offshore, the small island of Mokolii rises from the water like a perfect green triangle. That shape gives it both names. It’s one of the most photographed landmarks on Oahu, especially at sunrise or sunset.

The views here are nothing short of cinematic. Framed by the dramatic Koolau cliffs, Kualoa Beach feels like stepping onto a movie set. Visitors often enjoy gentle swims, scenic walks along the shoreline, or simply relaxing under swaying palms.

This is a perfect spot to pause, breathe in the fresh ocean air, and take in the natural beauty of the island.

Frequent questions

About visiting Kualoa Beach

Kualoa Beach Park is a perfect spot to pause, cool off, and connect with the island’s natural beauty. Its scenic and tranquil vibe makes it a great place to connect with the island during your visit. Here are some common questions to help you plan your visit:

Kualoa Beach Park is found on Oahu’s scenic Windward Coast, directly across from the famous Kualoa Ranch. You’ll find it along Kamehameha Highway (Hwy 83), about a 45-minute drive from Waikiki. The park is easy to spot with its vast grassy areas, tall palm trees, and iconic views of Mokolii Island (Chinaman’s Hat).

If you come across what might be Hawaiian ancestral remains (iwi kupuna) while visiting a beach or another area, do not disturb the site. These remains are deeply sacred and culturally significant.

  • Phone: (808) 692-8015
  • Email: dlnr.intake.shpd@hawaii.gov

It’s important not to disturb the site. These remains are culturally significant, and proper protocols must be followed to ensure respectful treatment in line with Native Hawaiian customs and state law.

Kualoa Beach Park is open every day from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the weekdays or mornings when the beach is less crowded. If you’re looking to catch a stunning sunset, the view from this beach is unbeatable, especially with Chinaman’s Hat as the backdrop.

No reservations are needed for general visits to Kualoa Beach Park. However, you may need a permit if you’re planning a large gathering, event, or commercial activity (such as filming). Be sure to check with the City and County of Honolulu for any specific permit rules.

Kayak rentals must be registered with the State, and you will see the tag. Life vests are mandatory. The rules are slightly more relaxed on paddleboards. Commercial operators need permits from DLNR to operate trips to Mokolii (Chinamanʻs Hat), and there are no rentals on the beach.

In that case, you must make your reservations in advance as no beach services exist here.

Kualoa Beach Park on Oahu has various options, including camping, and it is a favorite stop. There are a few regulations to keep in mind:

  • Lifeguards: Lifeguards are on duty, but it’s always a good idea to stay aware of the water conditions and supervise children closely.
  • Ocean Conditions: The water is typically calm, but it’s always important to be cautious and stay aware of any changes.
  • Parking: Parking is available but can fill up quickly, especially during peak hours. Arrive early or consider using nearby public parking.
  • Prohibited Activities: Activities like loud music, fishing in non-designated areas, and large gatherings without permits are restricted to maintain the peaceful nature of the beach.
  • Any tour stop longer than 15 minutes requires a permit.
